Selkup („The Uralic Languages”)

 

Nowadays the Selkup language is spoken by 2,000 descendants of an indigenous population of a vast West Siberian taiga area. However, the Selkups are now outnumbered by Russians. Moreover, Selkup is used only in family life and in traditional domains of the economy (fishing, hunting), but not in administration or any other official sphere.

Selkup-Russian bilingualism is universally spread among Selkup speakers in the South.

Before the twentieth century it was used as a lingua franca, widely known by non-Selkups too in the North-East part of West Siberia. This may have contributed to the relative simplicity of its grammatical system in comparison with other Samoyedic languages. Structurally, Selkup looks closer to Ugrian languages than its Northern Samoyedic relatives.

The dynamic stress in Selkup is mobile and its placement in a word is determined by phonetic and morphological factors.

Perfective/Imperfective Aspect (p. 566)

Verbs in Selkup are perfective or imperfective. The same aspectual meaning is preserved throughout the paradigm of verbal forms derived from the same stem. The paradigms of perfective verbs, as distinct from imperfective ones, lack present participles. Perfective and imperfective verbs with primary stems do not differ formally.

The perfect (p. 566)

Different tenses are distinguished only in the indicative (present, future, past, past narrative) and the inferential (present, future, past narrative). The present tense renders the meaning of “present perfect” with perfective verbs and that of “present continuous” with imperfective ones

Semantic Distinctions of Evidentiality (p. 566)

Categories of moods include, among the others, the inferential or latentive mood, used for reporting events which the speaker did not witness directly.

Word Order (p. 576)

The dominant word order in Selkup is SOV, but also other types of word order can occur: OSV (with topicalization of the direct object) or SVO (with the subject focalized). Interrogative words directly precede sentence predicates. A significant role in shaping the focus structure of the sentence is also played by the conjugation type (objective or subjective) of transitive verbs.

Negative Form (p. 575)

There is no negative verb in Selkup (the negation is expressed by preverbal particles).

Comparative Constructions (p. 563)

There are no morphological degrees of comparison in Selkup. The meaning of the superlative degree is rendered with the prepositive particle poosï.
